Can we use AdSense Ads in IFrames as per policies

If you run a website or if you are a content writer, you will know what is Google AdSense. It as an advertising program from Google which helps content authors to earn advertising revenue from their online content. AdSense is clearly the market leader in online advertising for small publishers.

Google has very strict policies on how webmasters can use AdSense Ads in the web pages. Google has made strong efforts to protect the interests of the advertisers and ensure the quality of their advertising network.

One of the confusion many webmasters had was about using Google Ads in IFrames. Google was not very clear on their policies in IFrames until recently. So far, Google was allowing AdSense Ads in IFrames as long as they do not violate other policies. However, this created lot of confusion, errors and accidental clicks making the advertisers lose their money. For example, a webmaster could make a small IFrame and put an Ad in a webpage in a manner the Ad is not fully visible. Another misues of IFrames is, cross website advertising. A webmaster who do not have an AdSense account could use Ads from another website through IFrames since IFrames allow pages from another site to be displayed in a website.

Some webmasters abused IFrames to bypass the maximum limit of Ad units per page. Google allows only 3 ad units per page. However, since each IFrames load a separate page, Google has no way of automatically imposing this rule.

Google Ads are not allowed in IFrames anymore

Considering various issues in using Google Ad code in IFrames, Google recently (June 2011) made an announcement that Ads are not allowed in IFrames any more, unless you obtain special written permission from Google.

This announcement on the AdSense program policies clarified the use of Ad code in IFrames. Unless you are a big publisher who can convince Google to review your site and get special permission, you cannot use AdSense Ads within IFrames in your web pages.

Should I remove Ads from IFrames?

Since Google allowed Ads within IFrames in the past, many webmasters had implemented Ad code within IFrames in many websites. However, after the recent change in the program policies, you should not use Ad code within IFrames. If you currently have Google Ads displayed within IFrames, you are strongly recommended to remove them as quickly as possible. Google has not announced any deadlines to remove Ads from IFrames, but it is a good idea to act quickly. You just have one AdSense account and you may not want to risk it for disabling for policy violations.

Is AdSense allowed in sites with the word Hacking in domain name and content

There are lot of ethical hackers out there who work on computer and network security. Governments and many big organizations encourage ethical hackers to check the security loop holes in their network. 

Many ethical hackers and security experts love to share their knowledge with the world through their blogs and websites. Many use Google AdSense program on their websites to monetize the content. 

Here is a big confusion: Does Google AdSense program policies allow AdSense in hacking related content?

Google has made its policies very clear on hacking related content in its program policies. Here is a line from the Google AdSense Program Policies:

Also, Google has a separate section on "Prohibited Content":

Placement of Google ads is not permitted on websites that promote any form of hacking or cracking. Hacking and cracking content is content that provides users with instructions or equipment that tampers with or provides illegal access to software, servers, or websites.

The above rules are applicable for content that encourage and help hacking and cracking. It is also applicable for sharing license keys, helping to get access to licensed systems, sharing protected material etc.

If you are writing about ethical hacking or sharing knowledge on hacking, depending on what you write, it may not be a violation of AdSense policies. For example, if you are writing articles on how to protect your computer from hacking, how to secure your network hackers etc, there is nothing wrong in it and AdSense policies will not be violated (in my opinion).

Is it allowed to use the word HACKING in domain names?

Here is what I learnt from my last 12 years experience in running websites. Having the keyword "hacking" or similar terms may not violate AdSense policies. However, it will definitely trigger an alert by their automated systems and you site could go in to manual review for content. Through the manual review, Google could find some other violations which can put you in to trouble.

If you use the keyword "hacking" in the domain name, make sure your site is 100% complaint with all AdSense program policies. You may not get nay relaxation for other rules when you already have a risky domain name!

If you allow user generated content or have discussion forums, it is easy for someone to post some hacking related content which violates AdSense policies and by having a domain name that support "hacking" you are inviting an audit or "good by" letter from AdSense.

Here is another important point to consider. In many of the articles I wrote about Hacking incidents, hacking news etc, Google decided not to show AdSense Ads but did not notify me about it. (This was probably because I have been using AdSense from the time Google launched it and they did not want to kick me out but chose not to show Ads in those pages.). What this would mean to you is, you may not have any Ads shown in many of your pages!

The scenario would change if your website is an authority website and people refer to your site for solution to hacking problems! Are you there yet?

The short answer at the end is, don't choose a domain name with the word "hacking" in it unless you have some strong reasons to go for it.

How to prevent AdSense Account Click Bombing

Click bombing is one of the biggest nightmares for many AdSense publishers. To maintain the high quality of the AdSense network, Google monitors click activities very closely and take strict action against the publishers who click on their own Ads or encourage others to click. Since Google pays primarily on click basis, many new publishers are tempted to click on the Ads themselves to see few extra dollars in their AdSense account. But Google has very sophisticated systems to track such clicks and if you are caught, your AdSense account will be disabled. I never heard anyone getting their account back once disabled for invalid clicks.

If you look at the popular webmaster forums and Google's official forum for AdSense, numerous publishers have reported that they lost their AdSense account for invalid activity like repeated clicks on their AdSense Ads. Most of them claim that they never clicked on their Ads but it was someone else doing it intentionally with the intention of getting their AdSense disabled (which is popularly referred as "click bombing").

How to prevent with Click Bombing on AdSense account

There are no fool-proof methods to completely stop the fraud clicks. However, you have a few options to reduce the chances and also to avoid any negative impact on your account. 

Here are some AdSense tips to deal with click bombing:

Stop talking about your AdSense income: The best option is to avoid chances of click bombing even though you can't completely prevent it. Stop bragging about your AdSense earnings in public forums and social media. Most people don't want to see you making lot of money. Such people will do anything to get your account disabled to stop you talking about your high income. If you are making money from AdSense, just save your money and stop talking about it. That's the best way to keep your AdSense safe from click bombing.

Watch your reports: Always keep an eye on your AdSense reports and monitor the clicks and CTR. If you see any unusual activity like too many clicks in a short period of time, pay close attention to it. Are they keep increasing? Is it happening in short intervals?

If the number of clicks are unusually high and if it continues, it indicates someone is repeatedly clicking on your Ads and most probably his intention is to get your AdSense disabled. It could be one of your competitors or someone could be doing it for no reason.

There are few things you can do to protect your AdSense account:

Step 1. Remove AdSense Ads temporarily from your account so that there will be no Ads for them to click on.

Step 2: Login to your AdSense account and remove your site from the list of authorized sites to show Ads. It may take up to 24 hours for this action to come in to effect. So after 24 hours of this step, you can put your Ads back on the site but keep your site unauthorized until you are sure the click bombing has completely stopped.

I suggest you use the second option for many reasons. In case of option 1, when you remove the Ads, the person will know you have removed the Ads. He would stop the work but would come back and repeat it when you put the Ads back. In case of step 2, he will never know you have unauthorized Ads in the site since he will continue to see the Ads as usual. He will keep clicking but the clicks are not counted by Google and so your site is safe from getting disabled. The click bombers will eventually get tired and without seeing any results, they would stop trying (hopefully).

Step 3: Let Google know that you have noticed invalid clicks on your account and let Google know the steps you have taken to keep your account in good standing. Also suggest Google to deduct the invalid earnings from your account. I have explained below the steps for reporting this to Google.

Step 4: If you have an account manager at Google, send an email to him/her explaining the situation. They can add notes to your account to avoid any unexpected action from the policy team on your account.

Prepare information to submit to Google

As I mentioned above, you must remove the ads temporarily and un-authorize your site in AdSense so that your clicks will not be counted. Next step is, to gather all possible information about the invalid activity since you will need that to report it to Google.

1. Record the date and time of the invalid activity. 

2. Analyze your Google Analytics (or other stats) and look for suspicious traffic. Record the IP address of suspicious visits to various pages which recorded invalid clicks. (If you have created url channels and custom channels, you will be able to figure out which pages received click bombing)

3. See if you can figure out from where the suspicious request came from. I have seen cases some bloggers have posted a public thread in a forum saying "Site X copied my content and not responding to me when I asked them to remove the content. Can you all go and click on his AdSense Ads so that it will get disabled?". Check out if you can trace the origin of the clicks to any such sources.

Once you gather all such information, prepare to report the activity to Google.

How to report click bombing to Google

If you have found that there were lot of invalid clicks, it is a good idea to report it to Google so that Google will know that you are not the culprit. But before you go to Google, make sure you are following all the AdSense program policies and guidelines set Google. You may not want Google to find that you are violating some other AdSense policies when they review your site. When you report invalid activity to Google, there is a chance that Google AdSense team will review your site and check the cause of invalid activity. To be on the safer side, make sure your site comply with all AdSense policies and quality guidelines.

Once you are ready to report click bombing or invalid activity to Google, go to Invalid Clicks Contact Form and provide all the information.

Is the AdSense account at risk for click bombing?

It is difficult for Google to identify whether the publisher is doing the fraud clicks to increase the income or someone else is doing it with the intention of harming the publisher. Google uses several signals to find out the cause of invalid clicks. In case of reputed and well established AdSense accounts in good standing, Google will usually ignore the invalid clicks and cancel the invalid earnings. However, in case of new accounts and accounts that having a history of policy violations could be disabled by Google.

Do not try to alter ad code generated by Google AdSense. This is strictly prohibited by Google AdSense and do not try to change layout, targeting ads and behavior of ads. You need to only put the ads simply but not permitted to alter the code of Google AdSense. Reply Google AdSense genuinely when you are given notice from Google AdSense for violation of Google AdSense policies. Try to correct the mistake and assure Google AdSense that the mistake will not be repeated in future. Google AdSense will keep record of your violations of Google AdSense policies. Should websites and blogs wait for 6 months before using AdSense Ads?

Adsense is a great program from Google to help online content writers monetize their online content. I have been a Google AdSense publisher almost from the time Google launched this program and have gone through a lot of experience during my last 8 year journey with Google AdSense. During the initial stages, I have received warnings from Google for accidental violation of policies which helped me learn more about the program and correct my mistakes. Some of my websites were removed from AdSense program but got included back after I corrected the concerns raised by Google. I implemented AdSense Host APIs for revenue sharing in some websites. 

In this post, I like to discuss the requirement "website should be active for 6 months before AdSense can be used on it".

Why Google require site has to be 6 months old before AdSense Ads can be used

Google did not introduce this rule for no reason. They make money from AdSense program and so they want to promote it as much as possible. However, they introduced the new rule to ensure the overall quality of the program is not compromised.

In last couple of years, AdSense has become so popular such that many students think they can earn huge money from AdSense and live without a job. You can see numerous websites claiming "Yου саn fire уουr Boss аnԁ mаkе yourself уουr οwn Boss". There are lot of online fraud services offering ways to get rich by doing fraud with Google AdSense.

Such fraud programs have been affecting the quality of AdSense program. Google does not want their advertisers to be affected by fraud clicks on their Ads. In order to prevent or reduce fraud clicks and loss of revenue for the advertisers, Google introduced several rules and policies.

One of such policies to reduce fraud activity on Google Ads is, website should be active for 6 months before you can use AdSense Ads.

Why this rule is applicable only for certain countries?

The 6 months requirement is applicable for certain countries. Publishers from countries like USA, Canada and most native English speaking countries can use AdSense on their websites or blogs from day 1. Why? Is it racism?

Google is not in to racism or discrimination. This policy is applicable for certain countries because Google is facing large volume of fraud activities from those countries, especially because a large number of AdSense users from those countries do not have good writing skills in English and so they engage in illegal ways to monetize their online content. Some of the fraud ways they engage include click-exchange where they click on Ads of their friends in exchange of clicks by them. Google takes fraud clicks very seriously.

This does not mean there is no fraud clicks from countries like USA. Since the people from those countries are native English speakers, they can actually write content in English and monetize the content in genuine ways rather than engaging in fraud clicks and get some quick money and then later lose their AdSense account.

Another reason the fraud activities are higher in countries like India and China are, there is no proper address and identification system. For example, in India, a person can be known in multiple names and have different variants of the same in name in various bank accounts. People can use different addresses and can still receive mails. Sometimes people write name and initials, sometimes they write first name and last name and so on. The problem here is, if a person lose an AdSense account, it is easy for him to re apply for a new AdSense account in another name. If he get approved in that name, he can go to bank and open another bank account with that name and still cash the AdSense cheques. Most addresses in India include landmarks like "Near High School", "Near Railway station" and so on. When the fraud publishers re apply for new AdSense accounts, they will use different variants of the address and it is almost impossible for Google to detect the applicant is the same person.

In countries like USA, it is almost impossible to use a different variant of an address or name. Name and Address are well defined and bank will not accept an altered name or address. 

So, there is racism or discrimination is not the reason for 6 months requirement for AdSense publishers from countries like India, Pakistan and China. Rather, Google want to reduce fraud publishers and increase the overall quality of AdSense program.

Should I own the site for 6 months or just the domain has to be 6 months old?

The policy regarding 6 months old websites for AdSense eligibility is not very clear, even though the intention is clear - "prevent abuse". There are different interpretations given by different experts and I will tell me stand too.

Before we conclude the exact definition of the 6 months requirement, let us analyze the wordings used by Google in various places.

Eligibility to participate in AdSense

The official AdSense support website states that you must have owned the site for 6 months before you can use AdSense Ads on the site.

Have you owned your site for 6 months?
In some locations, including China and India, we require publishers to have owned their sites for 6 months. We've taken this step to ensure the quality of our advertising network and protect the interests of our advertisers and existing publishers.

This definition confirms you must have owned the site for 6 months. Even though the words does not clarify it, I am sure Google meant you should have an active site, running with valid content for atleast 6 months before you can apply for AdSense for this site. Read more at the official site.

Many people interpret this as the domain has to be 6 months old. I have seen domains listed for sale claiming "This domain is 6 months old and is eligible to use AdSense".

I am sure this is not what Google wanted. You cannot simply purchase a domain name which is 6 months old and start using AdSense on the next day. The intention of the policy is, you must have worked hard for several months to bring quality content to the site and started getting good traffic to your site.

Another intention of the policy, in my view, is to prevent fraud where people buy new sites, do something to get some money and then move on to the next site. 

However, I have seen many people from countries like China and India getting AdSense applications approved even when the site is not 6 months old. This indicates that the 6 months requirement is only to prevent abuse of the system but if the site is very good, Google would go ahead and approve the site for AdSense.

Can we use existing AdSense account on new websites before 6 months?

This is another question many publishers ask often. There are no clear answer from Google on this. I have seen many forum threads in Google AdSense forum asking this question and many top contributors have given conflicting answers. 

The Help topic that talk about 6 months requirement is written in the context of new AdSense applications. It does not clearly say whether this rule is applicable for existing AdSense accounts on new sites. 

Here is my take on this. Google want to do business with genuine publishers. The 6 months requirement is to turn away fraud publishers and low quality websites. If you have developed a high quality website with lot of valuable content, why would Google not allow you to use AdSense? In my personal opinion, Google may allow you to use AdSense Ads on a new site, if it has sufficient quality content that make it a valuable publisher for Google. However, if you created a brand new web site with the hope that you will have valuable content in future but have nothing yet, it may not be a good fit for AdSense. 

Can we use AdSense Ads on blogs before 6 months?

Many bloggers are confused whether they can use AdSense Ads on new blogs that they create on www.blogger.com or www.wordpress.com. In those cases, the site itself is more than 6 months old and the blog website is not really owned by the bloggers. Google has not clearly mentioned whether the blog should be active for 6 months before using AdSense.

This is the only information I could find on Google AdSense support regarding the 6 months requirement on blogs:

The above information states that you can start using AdSense on blogs in minutes after creating it. But be aware that this topic does not really specify whether this is applicable for publishers from China and India.

Here is my take on it. If you are from a country that have the 6 months requirement (India, China, other Asian countries) to use AdSense, and just created a new blog on blogger.com or similar sites, wait 6 months. During the first 6 months to 1 year, you are not going to make much revenue out of your blog anyway.

Even after completing 6 months, don't start using AdSense immediately unless you have good traffic to your site. Once you start getting 500 page views or more per day, you can start using your AdSense on those blogs, provided you meet other requirements for AdSense.

If you do not have an AdSense account, apply for a new AdSense account 6 months after you start the blog and after you have created more than 100 very good quality articles. If there is no traffic to your blog yet, AdSense will not be helpful yet and so why take risk? If you lose your AdSense account, you cannot reapply. So it is worth the wait.

Publishers from which countries require 6 months waiting before using AdSense on sites?

I could not find any detailed information on Google AdSense help that clearly says which countries require 6 months waiting before using AdSense Ads on their sites. The only place I found was the help page that talk about AdSense Eligibility which says "In some locations, including China and India, we require publishers to have owned their sites for 6 months". Google has specifically mentioned India and China, but the same rule could be applicable for other countries as well at the discretion of Google reviewer.

Here is a AdSense forum thread that include few responses by a Top AdSense Forum contributor who repeatedly say that the 6 months requirement is applicable for everyone from every country, and it will be soon reflected in the AdSense policies. He conflicts with another top contributor in the same thread on this, but he is firm on his argument and he claims there were some background talk on this topic. He sounds like he has some direct information from Google regarding this. (That thread is almost 1 year old and Google hasn't changed their words on 'Some locations like China and India....') 

Conclusion: 6 months requirement is applicable for all sites and blogs

Google specifically require publishers from India and China to wait for 6 months until the site get significant amount of quality content. Even though Google hasn't listed out the countries which require to wait 6 months before using AdSense Ads on the sites, it is a good idea for everyone to wait until the site have a significant number of high quality posts (100+ articles/blog posts) and have good amount of traffic (500+ organic page views per day). Most websites do not make any significant revenue during first year, so it is worth waiting to get an AdSense account than creating one now and losing it soon.

So here is the complete insight about GCS and with users fed up with these ads and also with almost everyone using Ad blocker, AdSense may not provide you the worth which you want in the near future. So, GCS will be the best alternative even for the sites with low traffic.
